Staff Report From Augusta CEO

Thursday, August 23rd, 2018

The Augusta Sports Council and Ray Guy Award have announced a partnership with the Punt & Pass Podcast for the 2018 college football season. The Punt & Pass Podcast will make the official weekly honoree announcements for the Ray Guy Award as well as the Davey O'Brien Award throughout the fall.

The Punt & Pass podcast hosts are Drew Butler and Aaron Murray. Butler was the 2009 Ray Guy Award punter of the year. He also presented the Ray Guy Award live on ESPN during the Home Depot College Football Awards in 2017. Butler is a two-time first-team All American (2009,2010) and a two-time Academic All-American (2010,2011) at the University of Georgia.

Murray, a fellow bulldog, is the all-time SEC leader in passing yards (13,166) and touchdown passes (121) as a four-year starter at quarterback. He was a Davey O'Brien Award semifinalist in 2012 and 2013.

Each week, the Punt & Pass Podcast will announce the Ray Guy Award "Ray's 8" list, which features the top eight punter performances from the past week, as well as the Punter of the Week.

"The Punt & Pass Podcast is thrilled to partner with two premier awards in college football," Butler said. "The Ray Guy Award and the Davey O'Brien Award are the pinnacle for each respective position every year. Aaron and I can't wait to keep college football fans everywhere updated throughout the exciting season ahead."

Due to the Labor Day holiday, the opening week's Ray's 8 will be announced Tuesday, September 4 at 3 p.m. (ET). Beginning September 10, Ray's 8 announcement will be made each Monday at 12 p.m. (ET). The Punter of the Week will be announced Wednesdays at 12 p.m. (ET) throughout the season. All punters nominated by their schools are eligible for the weekly honors.

Ray Guy was No. 8 during his time with the Oakland Raiders. In 1973, Guy became the first pure punter selected in the first round of the NFL draft. His punts would often hang in the air for so long, the NFL invented a new punt statistic known as hang time. In 14 years with the Raider's organization, Guy was an integral part of propelling them to three Super Bowl titles. He also appeared in seven pro bowls, was named the 75th Anniversary All-Time Team, the Super Bowl Silver Anniversary Team and the 1970's All-Decade Team. On August 2, 2014, Ray Guy became the first pure punter ever inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
