Dis’ Art Contest Announced – Art for the Entire Community
Tuesday, November 10th, 2020
Walton Options for Independent Living has partnered with Walton Foundation to announce the launch of the Dis’ Art Competition. Designed as an art competition for persons with disabilities or disability-related artwork, Dis’ Art strives to dispel myths about persons with disabilities as it relates to art. Beginning November 9, 2020, local artists can submit one (1) piece of artwork via the online application form for judging in a two-part competition process.
The competition is sponsored by The 523 Gallery and is open to local artists with disabilities or artists whose work relates to the disability community in some way. The artist’s medium can vary to their preferred style but must be in a visual, non-moving, form. Submissions are done with high-resolution images uploaded to an online form. The winning artist will be invited to participate in Walton Foundation’s upcoming spring 2021 Undercover Artists Show. The top twelve artists will have their work featured in a 2021 Dis’ Art Calendar as well as have their work exhibited at The 523 Gallery in Downtown Augusta.
“We are excited about this project and the opportunity to highlight the talented artists with disabilities and/or disability-related art in our community,” says Ann Campbell-Kelly, the Director of Development and Communications at Walton Options. “With the assistance of public voting via social media, we will build a collectible calendar featuring works reflective of the CSRA’s rich, diverse culture. Funds from the sale of the calendars will also give back to the disability community by supporting Walton Options’ Services and Programs.”
The Dis’ Art Contest kicks off with submission entries on November 9, 2020. The first, internal judging process for finalists will take place from November 23 to 25. The second judging process, via Instagram, will take place from December 7 to 11. The 12 finalists and winning artists will be announced Tuesday, December 15, 2020.
“Over the years, our Undercover Artists Show has embraced the artistic culture of the CSRA and featured it during the annual fundraising event. This year we are excited to partner with Walton Options and The 523 Gallery to add more inclusion and diversity to our event with the winning artist of the Dis’ Art Competition. We know their work will be a great addition to the night.” said Cara Knollenberg, Director of Walton Foundation for Independence.
