Monday, August 16th, 2021

For many entrepreneurs, their startup begins with an idea.

But that idea, no matter how great, can’t become a successful business unless entrepreneurs master the ins and outs of markets, sales, finance, investing, logistics, and people.

Developed by Augusta’s theClubhou.se with funding provided by Innovate for All + Mesh Network Project, Make Startups is a 12-week evening certificate program in entrepreneurship developed in coordination with banks and investors to help entrepreneurs master the skills necessary to improve their access to capital.

Applications are now open for the fall class of theClubhou.se’s Make Startups entrepreneurial skills training. Students in need of financial aid should apply by Aug. 18 at 7 p.m. EST, and all other students may apply until Sept. 10. No-interest loans with monthly repayments are also available. To apply or to learn more, visit http://www.theclubhou.se/entrepreneurship-classes.

Classes begin Sept. 20 and meet evenings twice a week, with a weekly commitment of 4 to 6 hours. Classes cover:

  • Planning: Create a business plan, including customer discovery, market analysis, and branding.

  • Technology: Incorporate technology for operational optimization

  • Financing: Establish in-roads for financing with a focus on accounting and bookkeeping.

  • Law: Consider your legal structure, licensing, and contracts.

Make Startup students also receive 9 months of membership at theClubhou.se, in addition to weekly one-on-one mentoring with business coaches and mentors.

Graduate Spotlight

For Tonia Gibbons, the Make Startups entrepreneurial skills training was the push she needed to take her idea of starting her own consulting and PR business to the next level. “I had some pieces missing,” she said of her business, Farr More & Associates. “The training prompted me to work on my business plan, do research on my market to make sure it's viable, encouraged me to make sure that the business is structured right and can earn money to sustain and grow.

“Sometimes when starting a business, you don't think about certain things. This class gave me a roadmap that was easy to follow.”

Students of the training need to be prepared to put the work in, she said, including balancing their day job and workload with the additional responsibilities of the class. But the benefits are great. She continues to enjoy the opportunity to network with and be mentored by those she met through the training, for example. And the investment has brought a huge return.

Her business’ tagline is “Farr More than you think, and Farr More than you expect”—“because we can do more than people think or expect,” she said. And she discovered that through Make Startups. “Without a doubt, I truly recommend anyone who is serious about starting a business to invest in themselves first by taking this course,” she said. “It will make your journey a lot easier. I ‘started’ my business in 2019, but truthfully, I started it this past July after being in this class and having more of a foundation and direction. The amount of knowledge and confidence you gain from the course is priceless.”

“Successful entrepreneurs are those who invest in growing these skills that are necessary to achieving the success their vision deserves,” says Grace Belangia, co-founder of Make Startups and theClubhou.se. “We know that customers, capital and connections are what make a business successful. That’s why we teach a human-centered approach to help entrepreneurs understand customers and meet their needs. We work with investors, bankers, and financial service professionals to teach entrepreneurs how to acquire and manage investment. And we help entrepreneurs build their network through mentorships, partners, events, and our collaborative workspaces.”
