Revealed: Georgia’s Most Caffeinated City

Staff Report

Thursday, September 30th, 2021

Decatur has been crowned Georgia’s most coffee-obsessed city, following new research.

The study, by sleep experts Zoma Sleep, found that Decatur has the highest ratio of coffee shops to people, with 19 dedicated coffee outlets serving a population of 25,655 Americans.

This means that there is a coffee shop for every 1,350 people in Decatur - the highest ratio out of the 19 Georgia towns and cities included in the study.

The study analysed Yelp data to find the number of coffee shops in more than 10,000 cities and towns across the USA, and then cross-referenced them with the number of people living in each place to reveal where coffee is most popular. This data was then separated by state.

Suwanee is the second biggest coffee-loving area in Georgia, thanks to its 13 coffee shops and population of 21,803, which means that for every 1,557 people, there is a business serving coffee.

Marietta is the third best city for Georgia’s coffee lovers, with a population of 60,786 people served by 33 coffee shops, meaning there is one for every 1,842 residents of the area.

Fourth place on the list of the state’s most caffeinated cities goes to Alpharetta, where there is a coffee shop for every 2,122 people in the town.

At the other end of the scale, Columbus is Georgia's least awake city, with a ratio of 15,111 people per coffee shop – of which there are 13 in the city. Macon is second-to-last on the list of Georgia's selected cities – with one coffee shop for every 12,728 of its residents.

Despite having the largest number of coffee shops overall in Georgia (192), Atlanta only ranks 6th on the list of 19, due to its higher population of 512,550 – meaning that the city houses one coffee shop for every 2,670 residents.

Overall, Georgia placed 48h for coffee obsession in the country-wide survey, with a total of 8,752 coffee shops shared among a state-wide population of 10,519,475.

Commenting on the study, a spokesperson for Zoma Sleep said: “Coffee is an absolute staple in America, so it’s fascinating to see which major state is the most caffeinated. A morning latte or cappuccino is an essential part of so many people’s morning routines, so coffee shops across the US are providing a crucial, not to mention delicious, service.”
