Black History Month, recognized throughout February, serves to celebrate the past and present achievements of Black people.

Augusta University will host events throughout February to honor our country’s African American heritage. Some events include:

Being Black at AU: Family Game Night, 6 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 2 in the JSAC Coffehouse: Join as Augusta University celebrates and honors the Black community with Black trivia, card games and food (while supplies last). This is a space for students, faculty and staff to engage in discovering ways to get involved, build community and make AU a home away from home.

Multicultural Monday, 11:30 a.m. Monday, Feb. 6 in the JSAC Breezeway: This event serves as an opportunity for cultural immersion for AU students. Come play a Black History Month Trivia Game to win a free treat.

Livin’ Life: Black Cultural Workshop, 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 14 in the JSAC Butler Meeting Room: This workshop is an opportunity for students to discover how their identities play into their holistic wellness. There will also be a workshop on Black love and how to love/support the Black community.

Annual Interfaith Celebration featuring Dr. Eddie Glaude, 7 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 15 at Sacred Heart Cultural Center, 1301 Greene St. in Augusta: Combining a scholar’s knowledge of history, a political commentator’s take on the latest events, and an activist’s passion for social justice, Glaude challenges all of us to examine our collective American conscience, “not to posit the greatness of America, but to establish the ground upon which to imagine the country anew.”

Hollywood Noire: Black History Month Ball, 6:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 18 in the JSAC’s Roscoe Williams Ballroom: Hollywood Noire is Multicultural Student Engagement’s inaugural Black History Month Ball. Come enjoy a night of Black excellence displayed by the diaspora.

Step Afrika!, 7 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 26 in the Maxwell Performing Arts Theatre: The Lyceum Series welcomes Step Afrika! back to the Maxwell Theatre stage to round out Augusta University’s Homecoming celebration. Step Afrika! is the first professional company in the world dedicated to the tradition of stepping.

Multicultural Monday, 11:30 a.m. Monday, Feb. 27 in the J. Harold Harrison, M.D. Education Commons: This event serves as an opportunity for cultural immersion for AU students.

A Trailblazing Conversation featuring Gary Steele, noon Tuesday, Feb 28. in the JSAC Hardy Meeting Room: Hosted by Military and Veterans Services and in collaboration with MSE, Gary Steele will discuss his accomplishments as the first African American football player at West Pointe.

Black Cultural Fashion Show, 6 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 28 in the JSAC’s Roscoe Williams Ballroom: In celebration of Black History Month, MSE is hosting a Black culture fashion show. Come showcase your best fashion ensembles that represent African and African-American styles.
