Three seconds – that's how long you have to impress a potential client visiting your web page.  If you don't communicate your who, what and why in three seconds, potential clients will hit the back button, possibly never to reappear, according to George Garner, president and CEO of Brilliant Wealth Concepts, a website design, marketing and consulting firm located in Evans, GA.

"We're dedicated to helping local small businesses learn how to market themselves online," Garner said.

"Many small brick-and-mortar firms have a web presence but it's truly not effective.  You should speak to your clients in their language and have a clear call to action whether it's a ‘Buy Now’, ‘Free Trial’ or ‘Learn More’ button."

Garner founded Brilliant Wealth Concepts in February 2010. He has two employees and plans to add staff in both sales and marketing in 2015.  His clients are small companies with fewer than 100 employees and independent business owners such as subcontractors, attorneys and doctors.

Elements of good web design

Garner believes many small businesses make a mistake using “plug-n-play templates” for their websites.  Readily and cheaply available, companies that offer templates limit how companies can present themselves online.

"I strongly advise companies not to use templates because they really limit the professional appearance of a site," Garner said.

"Site design should be clean and simple with a clear flow to guide a client through to a call to action.  Single-page scroll-down websites are good examples."

Other strong design components include the use of video, big impactful font styles and the use of imagery to tell a story.

Getting found

According to Garner, search engine optimization has changed dramatically over the years.  "If you are using a couple of target keywords to be found, you are losing out."

Garner recommends using optimized video to increase the likelihood that your company will be listed at the top of a web search.  "You can create a 60 to 90 second video on You Tube and tag it with your keywords and website address.  If done correct, it’s likely you'll be on the front page of Google within a week," Garner said.

Paid advertising services like Google AdWords or Facebook advertising, let customers rank multiple keywords for their business and create web ads that will direct users to their site or a capture page.

Every small business needs to market itself online, according to Garner.  Not only are people increasingly shopping online and checking reviews of restaurants, they are also checking reviews of doctors, lawyers and other professional service providers.

"If you don't have a web presence working for you in 2015, then you're not serious about your business," Garner said.
