CSRA Regional Commission Area Agency on Aging Hosts Annual Volunteers Awards and Recognition Luncheon

Staff Report From Augusta CEO

Thursday, May 7th, 2015

The CSRA Regional Commission Area Agency on Aging will host its Annual Awards & Recognition Luncheon on Wednesday, May 20, 2015 at KROC Center Augusta. This fun-filled program provides the Agency an exciting opportunity to recognize the valuable work performed by its volunteers and others who support the well-being of seniors and persons with disabilities.

Volunteering for approximately 25 years, Clara Sutton, of Washington, Georgia, will receive the distinguished Clara West Volunteer of the Year Award. She will be honored for her ministerial work at the Wilkes County Jail where she offers words of encouragement to inmates, sponsorship of the Reese Booker – Rosa Warther Scholarship Drive for high school graduates preparing for college and the provision of transportation for seniors in the community to medical appointments and church services. The late Clara W. West of Thomson, Georgia, was a strong advocate, community leader and active volunteer.

Wesley United Methodist Church will receive accolades as the Volunteer Group of the Year.  The church group will be recognized for its long-standing support of Shiloh Comprehensive Community Center in Augusta.  Volunteers have supported the historic center for the past 15 years both financially and aesthetically. They have attributed to the overall appearance of the facility, ensuring the grounds and inside spaces are beautifully maintained.

In recognition of its ability to help those in need of assistance with the essential activities of daily living – bathing, dressing and meal preparation - remain in their own communities as opposed to relocating to long-term care facilities, CSRA Health Service, Inc. will be honored with the Provider of the Year Award.  Its president, Mary Georgia Mohr, one of the greatest visionaries of her time, and business partner, Helen Epps, helped many who would otherwise have had no choice but nursing facility placement. Most recently, CSRA Health Service merged with Savannah-based, Altrus, Inc. and provides guidance to almost 280 personal care homes throughout the state of Georgia.

Potash Corporation, Augusta, will receive the newly-launched Business Partnership Award for its generous donation to the AAA to provide home-delivered meals to seniors in the region. In doing so, the company is providing food security to those in need rather than have them await slots on an increasingly, long waiting list. Potash will be highly recognized for its willingness to improve the quality of life in areas where they both work and live.

The AAA will pay special tribute to the region’s Centenarians – those who have reached the great milestone of age 100 years and beyond. Centenarians will receive special tokens of appreciation for their great contributions to the CSRA Region.

General registration for the event is $20 and $15 for retirees, students, AAA volunteers and AAA providers’ volunteers.  Checks should be mailed to CSRA Regional Commission, 3023 River Watch Parkway, Suite A, Augusta, Georgia, 30907 and made payable to CSRA Regional Commission.  Please contact Dina Conklin at 706.210.2000 to register.
