Local Post Offices to “Stamp Out Hunger” with Golden Harvest Food Bank in Annual Food Drive

Staff Report From Augusta CEO

Monday, May 9th, 2016

Golden Harvest Food Bank is teaming up with Post Offices in the Augusta/Aiken area for the 24th Annual National Letter Carriers Food Drive, “Stamp Out Hunger”. To participate in this nationwide food drive, simply leave your non-perishable food donation in a bag by your mailbox on Saturday, May 14th. Your letter carrier will pick up the food and all donations will go to Golden Harvest Food Bank and their partner food pantries to feed the hungry right here in the CSRA.

“The CSRA has the potential to donate 150,000 pounds of food in this food drive,” said Travis McNeal, Executive Director. “It’s an enormous opportunity to show love to our neighbors even in the middle of our busy schedules.”

Occurring in May every year, the Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive comes at a critical time for Golden Harvest and their partner agencies. Food banks experience a decrease in donations during the summer months, as families are busy with summer travel and activities. At the same time, usage of food pantries and soup kitchens increases as utility costs soar in the summer heat and children who normally rely on school lunches are now at home during the day.

“So our goal is to help restock community food banks, pantries and shelters for needy families throughout the summer,” Rolando said, “and to build upon the millions of pounds of non-perishable food collected since 1992 from millions of generous postal customers.”
