Labor Day Jazz Weekend 2015 – Candlelight For A Cause Event Supports Local Charities

Staff Report From Augusta CEO

Monday, August 31st, 2015

Garden City Jazz teams up with iHeartMedia and Augusta Recreation and Parks to present the Labor Day Jazz Weekend 2015 – Candlelight For A Cause event. Sunday, September 6 in historic downtown at the Augusta Common. This event began as a capstone concert for the popular Candlelight Jazz Concert Series, but has now come into its own as a fundraiser for various charitable organizations.

In 2010, Garden City Jazz presented a Labor Day Weekend celebration of classic jazz at the Augusta Common in beautiful downtown Augusta, Georgia. Since then, the annual event has incorporated local/regional recording and touring artists. The musical mix has included mainstream + traditional + smooth + straight.ahead + swing + fusion + funk + free + classic + contemporary.

The year 2013 saw a change in format and the team presented a pop-up event. Complete with cocktail tables, linens, and ambient lighting, the Augusta Common was transformed into a jazz club – some called it “Birdland on Broad”. These pop-up events still occur around town, but remain off the beaten path and are smaller in scope. To receive an invitation to this unique event, text SECRETJAZZCLUB to 84483.

For 2014, iHeartMedia embraced the pop-up concept and incorporated a fundraising component, hence “Candlelight For A Cause.” Organizations supported were Augusta Partnership for Children and JB Academy of Musik Pupils. A visual art component was incorporated as local artists painted live for hours during the event.

For 2015, the team streamlined the event and is bringing in a couple of crowdpleasers to perform original and popular tunes that keep the crowd on their feet. Feature artists are the Mike Frost Band and Finesse. Charities supported include JAMP and Wilson Branch Family YMCA Miracle League and Live Strong Programs.

Since 2010, the following artists have performed: ABBA – Augusta Big Band Aggregate, Augusta’s Young Lions, Bill Karp, Blue Bistro Theater, Buzz Clifford, Celia, Doc Easton Smooth Jazz, Electric Voodoo, Eliott Holden, Kickin’ Brass, Llewon Felder, London Arrington, Loot Smalls, Mike Frost, Modern Jazz Movement, Niki Haris, Paisley Gordon & Elektrik Krazy, Passionate, Reggie Sullivan, Skipp Pearson, The Lunar Octopus, Tre Tailor & Tailormade, and the U. S. Army Signal Corps Jazz Combo.
