Greater Augusta Family YMCA Offers Free Safety around Water Educational Program

Staff Report From Augusta CEO

Wednesday, May 2nd, 2018

Two children die every day from drowning. This terrifying statistic demands that someone address the problem to protect our kids. This is why the YMCA Safety Around Water program exists.

Safety Around Water is a FREE national YMCA initiative to teach children how to safely navigate around all bodies of water: from beaches and boats to at home pools.  Over the 5 days instructors will guide children aged 3-12 with the use games and activities.

Students will learn how to recognize distressed swimmers and what they can do in an emergency.  Instructors will cover basic swim skills, what they can do if they accidentally fall in or get tired while swimming, how to properly put on a lifejacket, and so much more.  “Whether your child is on the swim team or has never had a swim lesson, these 5 days are a vital precursor to summer water safety.  All children in the CSRA, members or not, should have access to this program and that is what the Greater Augusta YMCA is proud to offer.”, states Amy McCarter, Aquatics Director of the Wilson Family YMCA.

SAW classes are offered FREE to the community for children ages 3-12, May 14 – 18 at Aiken County Family YMCA, Thomson Family YMCA and Wilson Family YMCA.

For more information, contact Amy McCarter at 706) 922-9618 or email [email protected].  Registration is available in person at your local YMCA or online at www.thefamilyy.org.
