The Augusta Convention & Visitors Bureau (ACVB) is launching the Great AUG Picnic, a community-wide initiative to eat local and enjoy local outdoor spaces this weekend, November 6 and 7.

The Augusta Convention & Visitors Bureau, Downtown Development Authority (DDA), and Phoenix Printing joined together with area restaurants to create an event that will encourage people to make plans with friends and family, order to-go items from local restaurants, and seek out new outdoor locations to enjoy them together.

Like a restaurant week, participating restaurants have identified a signature dish or offered discounts for certain menu items. A customer may order those items or other regular menu items and then pick a featured outdoor location to safely enjoy Augusta’s fantastic fall weather, good food and good company.

The Great AUG Picnic is designed to stimulate Augusta’s local economy, support local restaurants, encourage locals to find something new in their own city, and remember those experiences to share with future visitors to the area.

“As we all know 2020 has been a challenging year, but also a year to spark creativity and pivotal thinking. Because residents are traveling less and staying home, locals are willing to explore and experience their own destination,” said Bennish Brown, President & CEO. “When we get locals loving where they live, they will then invite friends and family to visit. The Great AUG Picnic is one way we can showcase our entire city and get locals to #LoveAugusta.”

“We’re happy to join with the ACVB in this initiative. It’s a great opportunity to try a new restaurant or a new food item at your favorite restaurant and then find a new picnic spot,” said Margaret Woodard, Executive Director Downtown Development Authority. “There are some hidden gems in downtown like Lafayette Square just off Broad Street, that make an ideal place to enjoy the Great AUG Picnic.”

“Phoenix Printing, has been a member of this community for over 150 years, it is our pleasure to support a local campaign that brings people to area restaurants. Not only are local restaurants our customers, but they are our friends and neighbors,” said Trent Mercer, General Manager. “We hope the Great AUG Picnic creates new favorite places for a lot of people.”
