Augusta University Volunteer Services and Community Engagement’s summer VolunTeen and VolunJag programs are now accepting applications from students interested in careers in health care.

Through VolunJag and VolunTeen, high school and college students are given a unique opportunity to volunteer with Augusta University Medical Center and serve alongside medical professionals, all while making a difference in the lives of patients, families and staff. Those who complete the program can expect to gain valuable skillsets that will maximize their potential for future health care careers.

The VolunTeen program is open to rising high school juniors and seniors who are at least 16 years old. The VolunJag program is for current Augusta University students.

“Our summer VolunTeen and VolunJag program has been beneficial to students desiring a career in health care due to the inside look at our AU Health facilities,” said Shayna Crawford, volunteer engagement coordinator. “For many, gaining exposure in real-time medical settings isn’t achieved until their third year of school, depending on the program.”

Both programs give a firsthand look at the roles of medical professionals, allowing students to absorb their knowledge and become familiar with proper practices in health care today. Students will get a chance to improve their communication and leadership skills by working within different sectors of the medical center.

“With this experience, they have an immediate opportunity to not only gain exposure, but also be provided hands-on training that will strengthen their understanding of the patient experience and collaboratively working with a professional health care team,” said Crawford.
