New data has revealed the states most likely to suffer from sleep disorders.

The study, conducted by sleep experts Eachnight, analyzed online search data for keywords, including ‘insomnia’ and ‘narcolepsy’, per 100,000 people to determine the top ten states with residents who suffer from sleep disorders the most.
New York takes the crown, with 570 average monthly searches for various sleep disorders per 100,000 people. Insomnia is the most searched-for condition in the Empire State; the condition that makes it difficult to fall and stay asleep gained 28,600 searches throughout 2023.
Maryland takes the silver medal with 565 average monthly searches per 100,000 people. Maryland’s most common disorder is sleep apnea, behind insomnia, a condition that prohibits people from breathing adequately during sleep. The state has searched for this sleep disorder 8,425 times in 2023.
Virginia, with 563 average monthly searches per 100,000 people, is the third state most likely to suffer from sleep disorders. Restless leg syndrome is a disorder that urges people to move their legs while sleeping and is the most common condition in Viginia after insomnia and sleep apnea, with 7,225 searches in 2023 altogether.
Massachusetts comes in fourth place with 558 average monthly searches per 100,000 people. Narcolepsy, a condition that causes people to involuntarily fall asleep at various times of the day and night, is the fourth most common sleep disorder behind insomnia, sleep apnea, and restless leg syndrome in the state. The Bay State has been searching for this sleep disorder 5,517 times throughout 2023.
In fifth place is California, with 556 average monthly searches per 100,000 people. Sleep paralysis, a disorder that immobilizes a person while falling asleep or waking up, is the most common condition in the Golden State, behind sleep apnea and insomnia. The state has searched for this condition 34,950 times altogether in 2023 so far.
Georgia comes in sixth place with 545 average monthly searches per 100,000 people. Nevada follows this with 539 average monthly searches per 100,000 people, Texas with 535 average monthly searches per 100,000 people, and North Carolina with 535 average monthly searches per 100,000 people. New Jersey is the tenth state the most likely to suffer from sleep disorders, with 530 average monthly searches per 100,000 people.
A spokesperson at Each Night has commented: “In the United States, around 70 million people are reported to suffer from various sleep disorders. This study has revealed insomnia as the most common, with 410,500 average monthly searches per 100,000 Americans.”
“The study highlights New York as the state most likely to suffer from these sleep disorders. Additionally, most states within the top ten ranking are also in the East. This may suggest that certain factors, including population density, weather conditions, and access to healthcare can influence sleep disorders.”
