  • Mississippi has the least tech job vacancies, with just 207 per 100,000 people
  • Louisiana and New York place second and third, respectively
  • Virginia ranks as the state with the most demand for tech industry professionals

A new study has revealed the US states with the lowest demand for tech workers, with Mississippi topping the list.

The research, conducted by DevRev, obtained data from Indeed to discover the number of vacancies in the tech industry in each state; these figures were weighed against the population to determine the final ranking.

The research found Mississippi to be the state that has the least demand for people working in the tech industry, with 6,000 vacancies working out at just 207 per 100,000 citizens.

Louisiana follows next but has over double Mississippi’s job total with 12,673, working out at 281 for every 100,000th person. The state is home to approximately 5,300 tech businesses, accounting for 2.3% of the Louisiana economy.

New York is next, despite having one of the highest numbers of tech job advertisements of any state at 55,609; its population means that these vacancies work out as only 289 per 100,000 people.

A total of 7,984 vacancies and 290 per 100,000 people put Arkansas in fourth place, slightly behind New York in the rankings.

Kentucky follows with 304 tech industry jobs for every 100,000th person in the state, equaling a total of 12,790 job ads and around 3,500 of those being for ‘technical assistants’.

West Virginia places sixth, with a total of 5,629 tech related job adverts; this works out at 310 for every 100,000 residents in the state.

Following closely is Michigan, having 31,712 industry job ads, which equates to 313 per 100,000 of the state's population.

Wyoming ranks next in eighth place, with 338 listed tech jobs for every 100,000 of its residents. The role of ‘technical assistant’ has the most adverts, accounting for 391 of the 1,710 total.

Proceeding in ninth is Alabama, having 15,938 tech related jobs in total, equaling 352 per 100,000 people.

New Jersey rounds out the ranking, with 31,624 job listings for roles in the tech sector. When weighed against the state's population, the total works out at 361 for every 100,000th citizen.

Commenting on the findings, a spokesperson for DevRev said: “The research certainly yielded some interesting findings; some of the states in the top 10 with the lowest demand for tech industry workers will be a surprise to many, as most have booming tech sectors.

“The biggest surprise in the rankings has to be New York placing in the top three, with New York city’s tech output alone equating to a reported $124.7 billion in economic output.”
