Georgia Power is investing $55 million into modernizing its network underground distribution system serving portions of the Downtown Augusta Medical District, including service to Augusta University and AU Medical Center.

The modernization of the more than 60-year-old electrical distribution includes installing new underground ductline, cable and manholes parallel to the existing system as well as structural and configuration upgrades within Georgia Power’s 15th Street Substation. Georgia Power officials said contractor trucks and other heavy equipment will be visible while also stating that its top priority is to provide customers with safe, reliable and affordable service.

Open trench work will be done in 100-foot sections to minimize entire lane closures; driveways or accessways will not be blocked; and any temporary impedance will be coordinated with the owner in advance.

There are no planned outages that will affect service and the work, which began in June 2020, will be performed in phases over the next three years. Most of the work is expected to take place during business hours Monday through Friday.
