Transforming Our Community Summit: From Adversity to Resilience September 23rd

Staff Report

Thursday, August 12th, 2021

As a community, we are confronted daily with complex problems that require work across agencies to achieve practical solutions. Often, there are conflicting ideas and a lack of understanding at the root of these problems and how to fix them.

Transforming Our Community Summit:  From Adversity to Resilience is designed to discuss the most persistent problems - violence, substance use, child abuse, disease, poverty, incarceration, and individual, family and community dysfunction - but also equip attendees with the tools to make better decisions to serve their organization and community.

Trauma is common and impacts our physical and mental health and development. Trauma impacts all organizations through lost productivity ($102.1 Billion), increased healthcare expenses ($29.8 Billion), special education ($5.5 Billion), child welfare ($5.4 Billion), and criminal justice ($4.6 Billion).

Nationally recognized expert Becky Haas will educate attendees in building trauma-informed communities, and provide a roadmap and tools on how to make significant progress across the different sectors of society. This conference is designed to help prepare attendees to implement trauma-informed practices in the community that build resilience, both individually and collectively, and lead to positive community change.

Transforming Our Community Summit:  From Adversity to Resilience will be Thursday, September 23, 2021 at The Richmond on the Greene (725 Greene Street, Augusta, GA) from 8:00am – 6:00pm and includes educational sessions, exhibitors, lunch and a networking reception at no cost to attendees.  A variety of sectors will benefit from attendance including first responders, healthcare providers, faith-based, juvenile justice, early childhood & education, youth-serving organizations, public health/social services, youth, school administrators, business leaders and parents & caregivers as well as the community at large.

AU professors Dr. Kimberly Vess Loomer and Dr. Melissa Bemiller as well as Julie Miller, Regional Manager for Georgia Family Connection Partnership for the Augusta CSRA region are founding the Summit.

“Building strong community partnerships that ultimately benefit all is at the heart of what we do,” said Julie Miller, Regional Manager for Georgia Family Connection Partnership for the Augusta CSRA region. “We want to help people develop the skills they need to be mentally strong for now and in the future to be able to handle life’s surprises.”
