Augusta Preparatory Day School Plans High-Tech Science Building

Thursday, March 10th, 2022

Augusta Preparatory Day School has announced its plans to build a two-story, state-of-the-art science and engineering complex on campus. The new building will be named the Rodger W. Giles Institute for Inquiry.

Derrick Willard, Augusta Prep’s Head of School, is looking forward to the new facility designed with the school’s science, robotics, engineering and computer sciences in mind. “The concept of the newest facility is similar to modern, flexible collegiate spaces and will allow for expanded programming by both the Science Department and the Information Literacy, Research and Technology Department at Augusta Prep,” Willard said. "The only comparable spaces, especially the Engineering Lab, will be in the Georgia Cyber Center downtown."

Architect Nick Dickinson Jr. filed an application with Columbia County on Feb. 16 requesting to revise the zoning on Prep’s campus to allow construction of the two-story building. Renderings show the proposed W. Rodger Giles Institute for Inquiry, named after the late Augusta businessman whose estate is helping to fund the project.

"Science is all about inquiry -- about asking good questions. This project is all about how our students approach learning and empowering them to solve today’s vexing issues and unforeseen problems of the future. We want to equip them with the knowledge and skills to develop innovative solutions to sustain thriving communities on Earth and beyond," Willard said.

The project is in the preliminary design phase and will be funded by a capital campaign. To date, more than $5.5 million has been pledged by a small group of the school’s generous supporters, including 100% of the faculty and staff. In the coming months, more information about the campaign will be shared and every member of the school community will have an opportunity to participate.

Founded in 1960, Augusta Preparatory Day School is a K-12 private school dedicated to developing the intellect, talents and character of each student in a diverse, college-preparatory, non-sectarian and welcoming community. The campus is at 285 Flowing Wells Road, Augusta.
