2020-2022 Augusta Champions Recognized
Thursday, May 11th, 2023
Destination Augusta (DA) and the Augusta Sports Council (ASC) recognized the 2020-2022 Augusta Champions at a breakfast held at the Doris Building. An Augusta Champion is a local resident who by working with DA and the ASC, helped to bring a meeting or convention, sporting event or family reunion to Augusta.
Due to the work of these Champions, Augusta has hosted federal, state, regional, religious, medical, and military meetings as well as sports events and family reunions, bringing the estimated direct visitor spending total to over $44.5 million dollars. A symbolic check was presented to Mayor Garnett Johnson representing the millions of dollars spent in the area’s economy because of the efforts of the 2020-2022 Augusta Champions.
“These hard-working residents are considered Champions because of the tireless and thankless work of planning or hosting an event,” said Bennish Brown, President and CEO of Destination Augusta. “These events bring people from out of town with money to spend. And after a successful event, they return home and share their positive experience in Augusta with family, friends and colleagues.”
Appropriately, the Augusta Champions recognition breakfast falls during the 40th anniversary of National Travel and Tourism (NTTW) May 7-13. This annual celebration of the contributions of the U.S. travel industry, spotlights the essential role that travel will play in driving economic growth and innovation through the theme #TravelForward.
“The Augusta Sports Council is proud to partner with Destination Augusta for this annual event in our community,” said Michelle Pippin, CEO of the Augusta Sports Council. “We are thrilled to be able to celebrate each Champion in our community, especially those that contributed to bringing an impact to sports tourism.”
Destination Augusta (DA) provides free planning services for bringing meetings, conventions, and family reunions to the Augusta area. DA also provides group services during the event to make the visit more enjoyable. For more information about the services offered by DA please call (706) 823-6600.
