Amazon Will Begin Collecting Sales Tax in Georgia

Increasingly, online sales taxes for are just peachy.

Beginning Sept. 1, Georgia will become the latest state where Amazon will begin collecting sales tax, the company said.

Georgia, the eighth largest state by population, last year passed a law seeking to force Internet companies to collect a 4% sales taxes from its residents, which may be higher in certain counties and municipalities. The law went into effect in January, and it wasn’t clear why it took until September for Amazon to be affected. A spokesman declined further comment. (Amazon owns a small Georgia-based website called Fabric.com.)

Georgia officials have estimated it may net $18 million a year in new revenue from the online levies.
