Georgia Revises Restoration Plan for Bobwhite Quail

Tuesday, December 10th, 2013

Georgia's quail population has dropped drastically in recent decades. The state has a new plan to change that.

The Bobwhite Quail is Georgia's state game bird. Just last week, Georgia revised a restoration plan to keep quail and other species around for generations to come.

"We're focused with this plan to try to restore Bobwhite habitat and population to huntable levels in landscapes that we have identified  that have the highest potential for bob white restoration," said Reggie Thackston.

Wildlife biologists will focus on seven wildlife management agencies in South Georgia. They say the restoration plan is needed because Bobwhite's have declined by 90 percent since the 1960s.

"What we want to do is just grow that habitat through working with landowners and working on public lands. We want to grow that habitat base so that we can support increased numbers of quail and other wildlife species that need that need that same kind of habitat we call early succession," said Thackston.
