Foreign-Owned Companies Responsible for Nearly 10,000 Jobs in Augusta

The Augusta metro area is slightly ahead of the nation in having jobs provided by direct foreign investment.
A report by the nonprofit Brookings Institution said the metro area had nearly 10,000 jobs, representing 5.7 percent of its total private employment, supported by foreign firms in 2011. The national average for the largest 100 metro areas was 5.5 percent.
“We’ve long known that metropolitan areas are the engines of the national economy. Now we know that they’re the country’s strongest magnets for global investment as well,” said Kenan Fikri, a policy analyst with the Washington, D.C.-based think tank.
The country’s 100 largest metro areas contain nearly three-quarters of the jobs supported by foreign direct investment – operations in which the majority owner is a foreign entity – compared to two-thirds of all jobs economy-wide.
