Wednesday, August 27th, 2014
The Greater Augusta Arts Council is pleased to announce that it was among the local arts organizations that was awarded a grant from the Georgia Council for the Arts in 2014. Other local organizations that were recipients of this grant are the Gertrude Herbert Institute of Art and Symphony Orchestra Augusta. Applicants hail from all areas in the state of Georgia.
The Arts Council will utilize the grant funding to program a series of community art events and workshops to benefit Augusta's vibrant arts community called "Aspirations: Building a Better Community." Beginning this fall, the Arts Council will present monthly workshops, open art shows, capacity building workshops, seminars and idea forums. These meetings will be held at the 600 Broad building, with the intent of helping activate that area of Broad Street. A second and vital direction for this funding will be to install a hanging system for artwork in the 600 Broad building. This hanging system will empower local artists by giving the community a dedicated showplace for the visual arts community in Augusta.
Symphony Orchestra Augusta and the Gertrude Herbert Institute of Art are also recipients of major funding from the Georgia Council for the Arts. Symphony Orchestra Augusta will use the $10,000 in grant funds to supplement its general operating budget, directly impacting the Symphony's season events and performances. The Gertrude Herbert Institute of Art will use these funds to support its large array of adult and children's art classes, as well as its exhibitions and arts education outreach programs.
