Qualified South Carolina residents have an opportunity to earn an industry-recognized advanced manufacturing certification at no cost through a state-funded scholarship at Aiken Technical College.

The SCMC program is an entry level Advanced Manufacturing certification that consists of 200 hours of training in safety, quality practices and measurement, manufacturing processes and production, and maintenance awareness in addition to other professional skills such as resume building and networking.

“This program is a direct link between education and employment,” said ATC Dean of Business, Computer Technology, and Training Dr. Steven Simmons. “With a growing need for employable workers in the local manufacturing industry, this program is a great opportunity for residents to develop skills and earn certification for employment.”

Qualified applicants are unemployed or underemployed residents of South Carolina who would like to start a career in advanced manufacturing. Applicants must successfully complete a drug screening and background check, provide a high school diploma or GED documentation, score Silver or better on the Work Keys Assessment and be committed to completing the program.

Those who successfully complete the program and final certification exam will earn a nationally-recognized MSSC Certified Production Technician certification.

ATC student Scott Albrecht, who was hired at a local manufacturing plant in the Graniteville area within a month of completing the certification training, said he attributes his success in finding employment to the SCMC program.

“If people want to get into the manufacturing industry, they need to look into this program,” Albrecht said. “The industry is getting more competitive, and having this certification really sets you apart. This training will better prepare an applicant to move up through a company.”

Those interested in the free SCMC program are invited to attend information sessions held every Friday at 10 a.m. in the ATC Auditorium located in the 100/200 Building on campus. During the sessions, those interested can complete the application process and take the free, on-site Work Keys Assessment. There will be a $20 fee for the required background checks.

            Friday, October 3, 10, 17, 24

The six-week program with day classes will begin on October 6, and run through November 20. Classes are held Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
