Doctors Hospitals has just received The Joint Commission’s Disease Specific Certification for Sepsis, becoming only the ninth hospital in the entire country, and the first in the CSRA to earn this important distinction. Just as the Joint Commission certifies Primary Stroke Centers and other programs, they are now certifying Sepsis programs. This means Doctors Hospital is taking the lead in preventing and treating a medical condition that kills more people each year than breast cancer and prostate cancer combined.
“Sepsis is a serious threat to patients, and we are using every resource at our disposal to treat it,” said Doctors Hospital President & CEO Doug Welch.
Sepsis occurs when a serious infection begins to spread throughout the body. Early detection is vital since approximately 40% of patients that are determined to have severe Sepsis do not survive.
“Being at the forefront in recognizing and treating Sepsis demonstrates our dedication to patient safety,” Mr. Welch said. “Led by our medical staff and our Sepsis coordinator, this certification required teamwork from everyone in the hospital. Our program emphasizes early detection through sepsis screening, quick treatment and continuous monitoring.”
