Two Augusta Commissioners Want to Let Administrator Hire, Fire Department Heads
Tuesday, March 3rd, 2015
As Mayor Hardie Davis seeks more power in the consolidated government, two Augusta Commission members are pushing to streamline operations by giving more responsibility to the city administrator.
Item 31 on Tuesday’s regular meeting agenda, requested by Commissioners Mary Davis and Sammie Sias, is a discussion of expanding the administrator’s duties to include hiring and firing of all department directors, excluding five “direct reports” to the commission.
Sias, who on Feb. 17 encouraged his colleagues to “have the fortitude” to discuss giving the administrator power to hire and fire department heads, said the agenda item was unrelated to the mayor’s requests but, if implemented, wouldn’t leave room for Davis to hire and fire department heads.
