Augusta Commission Justifies Decision on Mayor Budget Shortfall
Monday, December 7th, 2015
Augusta Commission members who voted to give Mayor Hardie Davis $26,245 so he can keep his office open through year’s end said they didn’t want to punish employees for his mistakes, create legal problems and more bad publicity for themselves.
“I don’t think it’s fair to take it out on employees right here before Christmas,” said Mayor Pro Tem Grady Smith. “That’s the worst time you can do something like that. I think he’s learned a lesson that we aren’t going to cave in. I think there’s ways we can take a little out in January and February and get him back on track.
