Georgia Lets Voters Decide On Taxes

Understanding that many voters are tired of top-down government that enacts tax policy by fiat, the Georgia Senate decided last week to allow voters to choose whether to cut state income taxes. This fall, residents of the Peach State can go into the ballot booth and decide whether to reduce the maximum state income tax from 6% to 5.8%.

This “let voters decide” model follows in the footsteps of other successful initiatives, including a Tennessee measure in 2014 and a ballot question in my home state of Missouri in 2010. The Georgia measure (Senate Resolution 756, which passed the Senate 39 to 17) takes a measured and fiscally responsible approach to future cuts: The state income rate drops if the state revenue continues to rise and if the state holds 8% of the previous year’s tax collections in reserve.
