Georgia Bank & Trust Merger Will Bring Some Layoffs

The pending merger between the parent companies of Augusta’s Georgia Bank & Trust Co. and Columbia’s South State Bank will cause some back-office employees to lose their jobs, the local bank’s president acknowledged Tuesday.
Exactly how many jobs, he said, won’t be known until after the two banks drill down to the finer details of the proposed $334 million stock deal expected to close early next year.
