U.S. Department of Energy Under Secretary for Nuclear Security and Administrator of the National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) Lisa E. Gordon-Hagerty visited the Savannah River Site (SRS). Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, much of the workforce at SRS and across the NNSA transitioned to telework, but there were many who continued to work on- site each day to fulfill missions critical to national security. During the July 10 visit, Administrator Gordon-Hagerty recognized the SRS workforce for their dedication in these challenging times.

COVID-19, as well as the response necessary to mitigate its potential impact, created significant disruptions to daily professional and personal routines. Despite this, the SRS workforce adapted and remained productive.

“In a time of so much change and uncertainty, the talented men and women at SRS have displayed steadfastness and resiliency,” said Administrator Gordon-Hagerty. “As I toured areas on the Site that support NNSA missions, I was proud to see that so much continued to be accomplished dur- ing these challenging times.”

At SRS, Administrator Gordon-Hagerty shared remarks at a ceremony recognizing members of the workforce. Additionally, she toured the Surplus Plutonium Disposition Project, which is key to efforts to remove plutonium from South Carolina; was briefed on updates to vital tritium capabilities in support of the Nation’s nuclear deterrent; and visited the proposed Savannah River Plutonium Processing Facility Training and Operations Center. She was joined by U.S. Reps. Joe Wilson and Rick Allen.

After leaving SRS, Administrator Gordon-Hagerty and the congress- men commemorated the Site’s
70th Anniversary and NNSA’s 20th Anniversary, two significant mile- stones in our Nation’s nuclear secu- rity, during a visit to the Savannah River Site Museum.
