Young Burn Patients to Shop With a Doc

Tuesday, December 8th, 2020

About 50 young burn patients will soon get the royal treatment and a shopping spree to get items on their holiday wish lists. The Burn Foundation of America will hold its annual Shop with a Doc event, sponsored by SRP Federal Credit Union, on Dec. 10 and 11 at the Burn Center.

"Shop with a Doc is such a fun event for everyone involved, especially our pediatric burn survivors. To see the look of joy and excitement in their faces is a reminder to us all the true meaning of this holiday season,” said Alicia Sweat, the vice president of the Burn Foundation of America.  “Shop with a Doc is even more vital this year because of the financial hardships a lot of our families have experienced. If Shop with a Doc can bring about happiness and laughter for our burn survivors, even just for a day, we have done a small part in making this holiday season special for them."

Through various donations and sponsorships, each child is allowed to shop for the items on their holiday wish list. They are accompanied by Burn Center physicians and staff, firefighters and other volunteers as they shop and enjoy a visit from Santa. During previous events, children have met other characters, including Olaf and Anna, from Disney’s “Frozen.”

The Burn Foundation of America provides assistance to families of burn patients being treated at the Joseph M. Still Burn Center at Doctors Hospital in Augusta. This includes lodging at the Chavis House, daily meals and transportation - all free of charge. In addition, the Burn Foundation assists patients upon their discharge with services related to their return to independent living. This includes medication, anti-scarring garments and transportation for follow up medical visits.
