Dr. Brian Miller, a psychiatrist specializing in schizophrenia at the Medical College of Georgia at Augusta University, is the new president of the Georgia Psychiatric Physicians Association, the state branch of the American Psychiatric Association.

Miller has been a member of the state association since 2005, became a member of its Board of Trustees in 2012, then began successive terms as an officer starting with serving as secretary in 2017. He also chairs the association’s Continuing Medical Education Committee.

He is a grant reviewer for the National Institute of Mental Health, an associate editor for the journal BMC Psychiatry, an editorial board member for Biomarkers in Neuropsychiatry and Psychiatric Times and the section editor for schizophrenia for Psychiatric Times. Miller is an honored educator who received an Exemplary Teaching Award from MCG in 2020 and a Distinguished Faculty Award in Clinical Science Teaching the year before. He has been a member of MCG’s MD/PhD Program Admission Committee for five years.

His research focuses on inflammation and immune dysfunction in schizophrenia, including identifying ways to better predict which patients will develop metabolic syndrome, including weight gain and an increased risk for cardiovascular disease, as a consequence of their antipsychotic treatment. Miller also studies the impact of insomnia, a common problem in patients, on schizophrenia symptoms and suicide risk.

Miller is a graduate of The Ohio State University College of Medicine, completed his residency and fellowship training at MCG and AU Health, where he was selected as resident of the year in 2010, and earned a PhD in medical science from the University of Oulu in Finland. He joined the MCG faculty in 2010.
