Golden Harvest Food Bank will be holding its 200th Mobile Market since the start of the pandemic in Waynesboro, Ga. this Saturday, June 5th from 10 a.m. – 12 p.m.
Golden Harvest has provided more than 15.2 million meals across its 25 county service area since COVID-19 began affecting our community. The Food Bank is still seeing an increased need for food due to the economic impacts of the coronavirus in Georgia and South Carolina.
15 months ago, when we started loading boxes of food into cars, we began to gain a stronger understanding of what food insecurity truly looks like.” said Executive Director Amy Breitmann, “It’s not only the homeless or impoverished who need access to healthy food, but thousands of families, veterans, and seniors who are struggling to make ends meet. We hear story after story of those making hard choices between childcare or medications, paying bills and food. The fact that we are still seeing the lines of cars and hearing these stories indicates the sustained elevation of hunger.”
Golden Harvest Food Bank has been distributing 22% more food and served 23% more families since COVID-19 cases began appearing in the CSRA. Its no-contact, drive-thru Mobile Market food distributions have put 3.7 million pounds of food into the hands of local families in need -- a 195% increase over last year.
Augusta University Health will also be on site to provide COVID-19 vaccinations as part of an ongoing partnership with the Food Bank. “This is an opportunity to reach 400 or 500 families with a targeted one-on-one approach,” said Dr. Joshua Wyche, Assistant VP – Strategic Planning & Pharmacy Services.
Golden Harvest and AU Health will hold the Mobile Market food distribution and vaccination clinic at Burke County Head Start located at 518 College St, Waynesboro, Georgia 30830.
Augusta University Health will also be offering vaccinations from 11:30 AM to 1:30 PM on Wednesday, June 9th at The Master’s Table Soup Kitchen located at 702 Fenwick Street in downtown Augusta, Ga. The Johnson and Johnson vaccine will be available and 2nd doses of Moderna.
