ATC Development would like to thank everyone who made the groundbreaking of The Standard a success. The ceremony took place Feb. 3 at the future site of the 136-unit midrise at the corner of 12th and Greene Streets.
James Heffner, community activist and board member of the Downtown Development Authority, emceed the groundbreaking. Margaret Woodard, executive director of the Downtown Development Authority, kicked off the event to discuss how important team work is to the growth of Downtown Augusta.
Sherwood Belangia, CEO of ATC Development, next spoke of the importance of The Standard’s premier location.
“This is a very strategic place,” said Belangia. “This is the gateway to Downtown Augusta. This is what you’re going to see when you arrive in the downtown area. We knew it had to be special.”
Belangia is proud his company is a part of the revitalization of Downtown Augusta.
“I moved here in 1993,” said Belangia. “At the time I kept hearing about how much potential Downtown Augusta had. I’m glad to finally see that potential turn into reality, and hopefully we can contribute to that.”
Community leaders Mayor Hardie Davis, Commissioner Jordan Johnson and Commissioner John Clarke also spoke of the positive impact The Standard would have on the area.
“What an incredible day for the city of Augusta,” said Mayor Davis. “This is what it looks like when you create a city of opportunity for everyone – for people who want to live, to learn, to work and raise their families. Our future is its brightest now, not only with economic growth and development but opportunities to create a complete community.
The Standard is ATC Development’s first urban community. The building will have studios, one- and two bedroom apartments. Amenities include a salt-water pool, 24/7 fitness center, bark park and parcel package area. Residents will have access to a rooftop sky lounge on the fourth floor. A commercial space on the first floor will be accessible to the public.
ATC Development, based in Augusta, Ga., began developing multi-family communities in 1975. Its portfolio now consists of 11 properties and over 2200 units in the Southeastern region. ATC builds, owns and manages its own apartment portfolio - a process unique to the industry that the company credits to its sustainable success.
