Augusta Sees Hike in January Unemployment Rate

Georgia Labor Commissioner Mark Butler said Thursday that Augusta recorded a January unemployment rate of 3.6 percent, up four-tenths of a percent over the month.  A year ago, the rate was 4.8 percent. Despite this, Augusta saw a rise in the labor force and the number of employed in the month of January.

"Even though we continue to see Georgia's workforce be successfully employed in record-breaking numbers, there is still much more work to do as we continue to see hundreds of thousands of jobs needed to be filled," said Commissioner Mark Butler.

The labor force increased in Augusta by 1,818 and ended the month with 266,622. That number is down 108 when compared to January of 2021.

Augusta finished the month with 256,907 employed residents.  That number increased by 455 over the month and is up by 3,046 when compared to the same time a year ago.

Augusta ended January with 238,500 jobs. That number was down 2,100 from December to January and increased by 3,900 when compared to this time last year.

The number of unemployment claims went up by 27 percent in Augusta in January. When compared to last January, claims were down by about 79 percent.

Employ Georgia, the GDOL’s online job listing service at employgeorgia.com showed about 7,489 active job postings in Augusta for January.
