Thursday, January 26th, 2023
The Augusta Sports Council will host the USA Cycling Masters and Para Road Championships and USSSA Military World Championships events for Q3 in 2023. Both sporting events will bring in an estimated 3100 participants from around the world with an estimated $5.5 million economic impact to the city of Augusta.
Continuing a long-standing partnership between the Augusta Sports Council and USA Cycling, Masters and Para Road National Championships returns to Augusta, GA on August 23-27, 2023 and is expected to bring in nearly $2 million in EEI. 600 athletes will have the chance to test previous results on the tried and true courses of hilly Fort Gordon and downtown Augusta. “Augusta looks forward to hosting the Masters and Para Road Nationals for the second time in a decade this August. Together with Fort Gordon, we look forward to the opportunity to provide one-of-a-kind race venues and experiences to the participants, their family and friends while they are in our community,” said Michelle Naval Pippin, CEO of Augusta Sports Council. Neil Smith, Sports Director of DFMWR had this to say about the 2 returning events: "At Fort Gordon, we take great pride in hosting events such as the USA Cycling Masters National Championships, or even partially hosting events such as the USSSA Military Worlds Softball Tournament. Including the exposure Fort Gordon receives for hosting such events, these events provide a lasting positive impact on those that participate, volunteer, visit the installation as spectators and for event organizers."
The USSSA Military World Championships are expected to bring in 2,500 athletes from around the world to compete in slow pitch softball at Diamond Lakes Park in South Augusta from September 26 through October 1, 2023. Augusta hosted the event in 2016 and 2017 where it brought in $6.9 million in EEI (estimated economic impact) for the area. "When 2,500 athletes descend on a city, there can only be positive outcomes. I’m excited to welcome the athletes and their families and for them to experience South Augusta and Diamond Lakes, one of our city’s premier recreation sites. The economic development and positive family recreation this event provides is a great opportunity for Augusta-Richmond County constituents" said Mayor Garnett Johnson about the event.
