RISE Augusta today announced that it has received a donation of 339 books from Bank of America. In recognition of National Reading Month, Augusta area Bank of America teammates collected books during the month of March.
“We believe having access to books and literacy education is fundamental to providing young people the opportunity to think creatively and stimulate imagination,” said Ora Parish, president, Bank of America Greater Augusta / Aiken. “We are honored to support RISE Augusta in their continued work in unlocking successful futures in our community.”
This trusted community supporter continues to help bridge gaps in services through its many philanthropic efforts. Whether through financial donations, gifts of time or educational resources, the children and families RISE Augusta serves have benefitted greatly from this partnership. This particular gift will find its way into the homes of children to read over the summer, many who do not have books of their own in their homes. We could not be any more grateful.
Laurie Cook with RISE Augusta explains, “We are truly grateful for this out-pouring of support from Bank of America. With 25 million children not reading at a proficient level in our country, it is critical that all communities focus on improving literacy, especially those with high poverty populations. Getting books into the hands of children to keep at home is an important first step.”
RISE Augusta believes in the potential of all children. We know that Education is key to successful futures, but that Literacy is the key to that education. Language rich opportunities impact even a small child’s ability to comprehend and understand the meanings of words. Having books at home is one of those fundamental building blocks that help propel children forward and prepare them for school and learning.
RISE Augusta has several ways in which people can help. First and most importantly, people need to realize that literacy is a big problem in our community and the nation – we cannot afford to ignore it! Locally, adults can volunteer to tutor and/or read to students. Families, businesses, and churches can host book drives. Financial gifts of all sizes are always needed.
