Security Federal Bank Broad Street Branch Opening
Tuesday, April 11th, 2023
Security Federal Bank is excited to announce the opening of its 19th branch at 1109 Broad Street. The historic 1924 bank building was restored, repurposed and improved to serve the residents and businesses of downtown Augusta and the cyber district. The convenient full- service banking location in the heart of downtown Augusta includes a lobby, drive-thru and ATM. The branch is staffed by Traci Pokrywka, Retail Banking Manager, Neida Bonilla and Carla Phillips, Retail Service Representatives and Kyle Scott, Small Business Banker. Security Federal Bank President, Phil Wahl, is also based at Broad Street.
This landmark structure was originally constructed in 1924 as “The Uptown Branch” of Georgia Railroad Bank and Trust and opened in January 1925. The original building was expanded and modernized in 1947 to add meeting space and air conditioning. As a result, the building’s neo- classical interior features, including a 25 ft. cathedral ceiling, pilasters and rich crown molding were compromised and concealed for almost 75 years. In 1963, Georgia Railroad purchased the adjoining property on 11th Street (formerly the site of Wilensky Bargain House and Consumers Grocery Co.) to add the modern convenience of drive-thru banking—one of the first in Augusta. This was the last major improvement to the property until 2022. Security Federal Bank teamed up with local historians, architects and builders to embark upon an extensive historic restoration and improvement project creating a historically preserved yet modern centerpiece for commerce and public enjoyment in Augusta’s central business district. In addition to substantial building improvements, the landscaped park-like grounds, restored fountain and four-faced historic replica clock provide a focal point and meeting place for the 10th and 11th Street blocks of downtown. This project’s significant community investment and attention to detail serves as a suitable celebration of Security Federal’s 100-year history as a local community bank.
Security Federal Bank was founded in Aiken, SC in 1922 and is the only bank headquartered in the Augusta-Aiken Metro Area.
