Augusta Sees Slight Uptick in Unemployment While Job Numbers Soar

Georgia Labor Commissioner Bruce Thompson said Thursday that Augusta’s June unemployment rate was 4.2 percent, up four-tenths of a percent from May. A year ago, the unemployment rate was 3.9 percent.
“The bedrock of a thriving economy lies in maintaining low unemployment, but equally essential is striking the right balance between job growth and a capable workforce that can meet the evolving needs of Georgia’s industries,” said Commissioner Bruce Thompson. “This well-balanced approach ensures businesses of all sizes have the talent they need to grow and succeed."
The labor force increased in Augusta by 1,592 and ended the month with 264,285. That number went up by 501 when compared to June of 2022.
Augusta finished the month with 253,306 employed residents. That number increased by 670 over the month and decreased by 231 when compared to the same time a year ago.
Augusta ended June with 243,900 jobs, an all-time high. That number increased by 200 from May to June and went up by 2,000 when compared to this time last year.
In June, initial unemployment claims were up by 8 percent in Augusta. When you compare June 2023 claims to June 2022, claims were down by 57 (-5%).
