Savannah River Mission Completion (SRMC), the liquid waste contractor at the Savannah River Site (SRS), has donated $15,000 to an area elementary school to help infuse needed resources for science, engineering, technology, and math (STEM) curriculum.SRMC awarded the grant to A. Dorothy Hains Elementary School at a recent Richmond County Board of Education meeting. The grant will be used for the school’s STEM program, providing funds for supplies, activities, and other resources to continue to grow the school’s STEM curriculum.A. Dorothy Hains Elementary School, located in Augusta, is the only elementary school in Richmond County to offer a STEM Magnet Program with all students receiving STEM instruction beyond the county curriculum.SRMC President and Program Manager Dave Olson views A. Dorothy Hains Elementary School as a good example of a STEM school, whose program includes a robotics club, math club, coding club, and numerous STEM challenge teams.“As Savannah River Mission Completion seeks to stimulate and incentivize STEM studies across the region, A. Dorothy Hains Elementary School is doing good work in the STEM area,” Olson said. “This school has a comprehensive curriculum, and it is certainly one to be recognized for giving students a good head start in STEM.A. Dorothy Hains Elementary School Principal Rachael McRae said she is proud of the school’s STEM program and thrilled about the SRMC grant.“We are grateful for the generosity of SRMC and their sizable investment,” McRae said. “This grant will advance our program even further by using the funds to purchase STEM robotics and coding kits that will introduce the students to engineering and robotics concepts, as well as the basics of computer coding.”SRMC comprises parent company BWX Technologies, Inc. with partners Amentum and Fluor. Its team brings the capabilities necessary to accelerate cleanup at the U.S. Department of Energy’s Savannah River Site through safe nuclear operations, optimized and integrated mission execution, and strong corporate governance.
