Georgia Power announced today the latest major international shipment to reach the Vogtle expansion site near Waynesboro, Ga. – the Unit 3 Steam Generator A. The steam generator, which was assembled in South Korea and shipped to the Port of Savannah, reached the site via train earlier this week. The steam generator is the latest international delivery illustrating the global supply chain in place supporting the first new nuclear units built in the United States in more than three decades. 

The 1.3 million-pound, or 650-ton, steam generator is 82-feet long and is the second delivered to the site this year for Unit 3. Steam generators are heat exchangers used to convert water into steam using the heat produced in a nuclear reactor core. There are two steam generators per unit in the AP1000 design. 

In addition to the steam generator, the pressurizer for Unit 4 was delivered to the site in late May. The 225,000-pound pressurizer was fabricated in Italy. The pressurizer provides a point in the reactor coolant system where liquid and vapor are maintained in equilibrium for pressure control. 

The expansion at Plant Vogtle is part of Georgia Power's long-term, strategic vision for providing safe, clean, reliable and affordable energy for Georgians well into the future. Once Units 3 and 4 join the existing two Vogtle units already in operation, Plant Vogtle is expected to generate more electricity than any U.S. nuclear facility, enough to power more than one million homes and businesses.
