Augusta to Host Largest Solar Energy Projects in Georgia
Friday, July 15th, 2016
The City of Augusta announced that it broke ground on three Photovoltaic solar projects as part of Georgia Power’s Advanced Solar Initiative Distributed Generation program. The three separate one-megawatt projects are located at the sewer treatment plant on Mike Padgett Highway, the water production facility on Tobacco Road, and the jail on Phinizy Road. The projects are scheduled to begin generating electricity by December 1st of this year.
Largest Municipal Solar Power Initiative in Georgia
“These innovative, forward-thinking solar projects demonstrate the best of public-private partnerships and collaboration,” explained Augusta Mayor Hardie Davis, Jr. “The working partnership of the Augusta Commission, Augusta Utilities, the Sheriff’s Department, and the Environmental Services Department shows that we can truly achieve more when we work together.” Davis added, “Augusta, we are building the largest municipal solar power project in Georgia and facilitating ‘Living Green’ in our state.”
Commission Solidly Supports Solar Projects
“It’s great that we were able to work together to reach an historic agreement for this solar program that will benefit Augusta and our residents for years to come,” adds Commissioner Bill Lockett.
“This solar project demonstrates how we can work together to make sure that Augusta is cutting-edge, innovative, and at the forefront of technology infrastructure for generations to come.”
The City of Augusta retained the services of Atlantic Coast Consulting, Inc. and Allied Energy Services to assist the city in identifying and selecting a firm to develop, finance, construct, own, and operate the Photovoltaic Solar Power System at each of the sites. After an extensive qualification and proposal process, Inman Solar was selected and has entered into a land lease with the City of Augusta for 25 years for the three sites.
Georgia Power is a 'Green Energy" Leader
"These three new solar power projects are also points of progress and pride in Georgia Power’s 'Green Energy" initiative," affirmed Mayor Davis. "We are thankful to Georgia Power, the Commission, and all parties involved for taking this bold step to stimulate economic development in our area and help Georgia Power continue its ongoing downward pressure on electricity rates for their residential and business customers.”
