Staff Report From Augusta CEO

Monday, April 9th, 2018

For 84 years Augusta has been welcoming golfers and guests to the Masters Golf Tournament with open arms and true southern hospitality.  The Augusta Convention & Visitors Bureau is thrilled to be able to extend that gracious welcome to invitees of the Augusta National Women’s Amateur Championship in 2019.

Augusta National Golf Club’s announcement of this new event will keep the eyes of the world on Augusta for a solid two weeks.  The addition of the Augusta National Women’s Amateur Championship tournament will increase economic development through visitor spending, create additional jobs, and further increase recognition of Augusta around the world.

An indicator of the economic impact the Masters Golf Tournament has on Augusta can be seen in an increase in hotel revenue.  In 2017, there was a 272% increase in the month of April’s hotel revenue compared to an average month.

“The addition of the Women’s Amateur event in the week preceding the Masters is great news for Augusta.  As the Augusta National Golf Club continues to add events and seeks to grow the game of golf, adding this women’s tournament showcases Champions Retreat and builds to the crescendo of the championship at Augusta National’s hallowed grounds,” said Phil Wahl, Chairman of the Augusta Convention & Visitors Bureau.  “This news is fantastic for the growth of our hospitality industry and will bring a new audience of visitors to Augusta.”
