This month we continue to salute those donors and supporters that are so critical to the success of Habitat for Humanity of North Augusta who often go unrecognized. These are the restaurateurs who provide lunches for the Saturday work crews. Workday lunches are most appreciated by our dedicated volunteer construction teams who give up each Saturday morning to build homes for deserving but needy Community members. This is why the lunch providers are so important to Habitat for Humanity of North Augusta.
In this issue we salute Wife Saver of North Augusta located a 414 Martintown Road. Wife Saver had their beginning in 1965 when George Cunningham began as a way to take care of the mounting medical bills brought on by his son (and now owner) Chris Cunningham’s childhood bout with polio. Built by the Cunninghams and a family friend “Hambone”, the original Wife Saver on Milledgeville Road stood in the front yard of George’s home .Thanks to the restaurant’s proximity to his home. George had a built-in workforce in his two sons, Chris and Robert. In fact, he often summoned the reluctant boys from their baseball games to make a batch of banana pudding or a pan of biscuits. “Then we'd go play until it was time to make some more,” Says Chris.
Over the years, they have become the centerpiece to many a tailgate, family reunion, church picnic and parties. Wife Saver fries chicken like no other, offers great service and has kept many of the same employees for many years.
