North Augusta Chamber Breakfast to Highlight Newly Formed Partnership

Staff Report From Augusta CEO

Friday, June 10th, 2016

Did you know that the United States is rapidly losing its competitive edge in math and science while the rest of the world continues to excel and climb ahead? Knowledge is what fuels economic growth, and this very asset is at risk. American students have fallen behind other countries in the subjects of math and science (STEM subjects), but the National Math & Science Initiative aims to change that, and it is headed to two local schools.

Superintendent, Dr. Sean Alford, will discuss the Accelerated Learning Initiative will begin this summer with the establishment of two NMSI Advanced Placement (AP Academies) at North Augusta and South Aiken High, transforming math and science education at these schools. These programs will focus on expanding advanced, college-level coursework to more students and increasing qualifying scores for attaining college credit. Alford will also discuss the new Early College in collaboration with Aiken Technical College at Midland Valley High School. The program will allow rising sophomores at Midland Valley to begin their college coursework early and earn an associate of arts degree from ATC before graduating from high school.

“Students must graduate with more than a high school diploma,” Alford said. “To ensure our students’ future success and that each is prepared to meet the demands of challenging postsecondary opportunities in college and the workforce, our school community must raise the level of expectations and rigor for all.”

Alford will also give an update on how funds from the Penny Sales Tax are currently being used to improve local schools.
