Monday, July 25th, 2016

The Family YMCA of Greater Augusta will premiere a brand new summer camp program the week of July 25-30 at Camp Lakeside. Camp IVEY is tailored to provide a traditional camp experience for children and teens who might not otherwise have the opportunity. The exceptional youth Camp IVEY serves are a diverse group of individuals with high-functioning developmental delays.

“All kids, regardless of their circumstances, should be able to enjoy the unforgettable memories of camp fun, and we knew this could be accomplished through Camp IVEY,” said Danny McConnell, President/CEO of the Family YMCA of Greater Augusta. “Camp IVEY is another way that we’ve been able to meet the needs of our community, and will be a great asset to the program options at Camp Lakeside.”

Camp IVEY will operate as a day camp throughout the week, with one night of overnight camp experiences on Friday July 29. Students from the Schools of Occupational and Physical Therapy at Augusta University will serve as counselors for the week. Two occupational therapy students, Hannah Stern and Chandler Hammond, will serve as camp directors for this week, demonstrating the programs’ commitment to community development.

“We are so excited for our campers to be able to make great memories and enjoy camp fun just like many of their siblings do during the summer,” says Sterling Ivey, Camp IVEY Founder.

Throughout the week, campers will enjoy traditional camp activities as well as therapeutic activities, such as dance, art and equine therapy. Unique camp activities for the week include an adapted pottery class at 1:00 on Monday, July 25. Campers will explore equine therapy at 10:00 am on Wednesday morning, July 27. Thursday morning at 10:00 am July 28, Camp IVEY will host an adapted dance class as well as opportunities for expressive visual art.
