Salvation Army Asks Community to Shower the Shelter with Towels

Staff Report From Augusta CEO

Wednesday, September 28th, 2016

One brand new towel will significantly help the hundreds of men, women and children who depend on The Salvation Army of Augusta’s homeless shelter for basic needs like food, shelter, and yes, a place to take a shower.

“Something as basic as a towel can help restore dignity to an individual and hope for a family in need,” said Philip Canning, Augusta Area Commander.

The Center of Hope, 1384 Greene Street, is in desperate need of new and gently used bath towels for both the men and women & children’s shelter.

Every day, approximately 120 people staying in our shelter take a shower. That’s more than 840 showers every week – nearly 44,000 showers in one year. Needless to say, the towels and washcloths wear out quickly. Our current towel supply is extremely low; purchasing new towels will put a strain on our already tight budget as we prepare for the busiest time of the year for our shelter.

Towels and monetary donations can be dropped off at the Center of Hope, Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.. The shelter also is accepting hygiene and toiletry items, such as toothbrushes. If you have questions please call 706-826-7933.
