Join the Georgia Genealogical Society (GGS) at the Georgia Archives in Morrow, Ga. on Saturday, June 1 for the GGS Annual Summer Genealogical Picnic. The picnic is the Archives second Quarterly Meeting Educational Series of 2019.

Georgia Archives’ Deputy Director Kayla Barrett will present “What’s New in Georgia Archives Research Tools.” Reference Archivist Tamika Strong will present “Genealogical Collections at the Georgia Archives: A ‘Hidden’ Treasure.”

After lunch, Civil War historian Brad Quinlin will present “Celebrating the 150th Anniversary of the Marietta National Cemetery.”

Featured speaker Brad Quinlin was born in Monmouth, Illinois and moved with his family to Georgia in 1982. Brad has always loved the study of American History, and upon moving to Georgia, he studied the Civil War.

Brad has been a reenactor for 33 years and worked on 27 movies and TV Shows.

On the TV show Who Do You Think You Are? he showed actor Matthew Broderick the last three days of his great-great-grandfather’s life. Robert Martindale of the 20th Connecticut Infantry was killed July 23, 1864, near Atlanta. Brad showed Matthew where Robert is buried in the Marietta National Cemetery.

Brad was the lead researcher and advisor on the Kennesaw Mountain Battlefield film called One Last Mountain, which received three awards. Brad was a researcher on the documentary The Untold Story of the Civil War. He also worked as an advisor for the National Geographic show Diggers and is working as historical advisor on a new History Channel project on Sherman’s March to the Sea.                              

Brad has written or co-written 15 books on the American Civil War and his research is being used in the exhibits in the new Cyclorama building of the Atlanta History Center. He has researched five new wayside exhibits at Kennesaw Mountain Battlefield National Park.                                                  

Brad has been married 44 years and has two sons and six grandchildren.
 
The Genealogy Picnic lasts from 9:45 am to 4:45 pm with time for individual research from 2:45 pm to 4:45 pm downstairs in the Georgia Archives’ Research Room where Georgia Genealogical Society genealogists will be available to assist with questions. There will be a registration table as you enter the Archives.
 
The event is free and open to the public. A traditional summer sandwich lunch will be available for a donation. Snacks at the breaks are sponsored by Friends of Georgia Archives and History.
