RCSS to Remain Closed Friday September 6th

Staff Report From Augusta CEO

Thursday, September 5th, 2019

The Richmond County School System will remain closed on Friday, September 6, 2019 to continue shelter support for evacuees currently housed on RCSS campuses from Savannah-Chatham County affected by Hurricane Dorian.

As of Wednesday morning, RCSS shelter sites house over 1,300 evacuees. The decision to remain closed on Friday is a direct result of the Governor’s remaining mandatory evacuation order and the resources necessary to support each shelter site. The School Safety & Security, Maintenance & Facilities, School
Nutrition, and Transportation Departments are working around the clock to provide support and services to evacuees. Administrators and staff, and those from each of the high school feeder schools, are at each shelter to provide leadership and site-specific support in partnership with other agencies. These
resources are necessary to effectively operate each shelter and they prevent the RCSS from running normal school operations across the system.

Varsity football games for Friday night will be played as scheduled.

The RCSS expects to return to school at regularly scheduled times on Monday, September 9, 2019 barring any unforeseen circumstances.

Any decision on make-up days will be made by the Richmond County Board of Education at a later date.
