Georgia Bikes is Now Go Georgia

Staff Report From Georgia CEO

Wednesday, October 16th, 2024

Georgia Bikes, the statewide nonprofit working to create a more bicycle-friendly Georgia, is now Go Georgia. Go Georgia is Your Voice for Active Transportation and Recreation.

This change reflects the organization’s updated and expanded mission: Go Georgia advances safe, equitable, and sustainable transportation and recreation as vital components of a thriving, livable Georgia. Go Georgia’s vision is: A Georgia where everyone has access to safe and enjoyable biking, walking, rolling, and transit.

Go Georgia began its journey in 2003 as Georgia Bikes, a dedicated advocacy organization focused on improving conditions for cyclists across the state. Over the past two decades, Georgia Bikes has worked alongside state and local governments, transportation planners, and community advocates to push for safer streets, better bike infrastructure, and expanded access to cycling for all Georgians. The organization has achieved major policy wins including enactment of the state’s three-foot passing law that mandates safe overtaking, and winning a $3 million grant that is currently funding the development of Georgia’s first-ever statewide Active Transportation Plan. Through these efforts, Georgia has become a more bike-friendly state, with increased awareness, enhanced cycling networks, and new policies to support active transportation.

Executive Director John Devine, AICP, stated, “Georgia Bikes has always recognized that safe, complete streets and trails benefit everyone, whether you bike, walk, or roll. As of now, our identity reflects that. ‘Go Georgia’ formalizes our more inclusive approach to active transportation and recreation. We've doubled our staff team to serve people who bike, walk, and roll, and our brand-new Grants Assistance Program is already helping communities across Georgia access essential funding to build safer streets and more trails. I’m thrilled to have the privilege of introducing our next chapter to all Georgians.”
