For centuries, the Savannah River has been central to Augusta’s identity, serving as a vital artery for trade, travel, and cultural exchange. It has supported the region’s economy through shipping, industry, and recreation, while also sustaining a rich and diverse ecosystem. From its role in Indigenous history to early colonial settlement and beyond, its continued importance is plain to see in modern tourism and outdoor life. To this day the Savannah River remains a powerful force connecting Augusta's residents and visitors with a rich global highway - water.
